honestly I can only speak for myself since I went through something similar. I found that it’s more of a preference of what way you like to draw better. I found that for me gradient shading/natural shading with lineless worked out best for me and come out way cleaner then I imagine. The opposite would be true as well. Cleaner bolder lines with cell shading. So both would work just depends on what method. At least theses are the guidelines I go by. Either way I already like the art you put out so I’m excited to see where you take it from here

I think both is pretty cool! I think it depends on the situation. Like if the background is very desatuarated, then the shadows are going to also be more desaturated and soft compared to bright sunlight or something more harsh.
I personally change it depending on the actual art style I’m going for too, like a more finished piece I’ll put more effort into incorpoarating more styles of shading rather than a character design sheet which I’ll leave it too probably only cell shading and maybe an overlay layer.
It really just depends on what you want to achieve from the piece and what style you are going for. Good luck :)

•why not both? a lot of artists use both cel shading and soft shading in their art because shadows behave differently depending on the lighting and the material of the object.
for example, if you want to convey a translucent object, it's best to use soft shadow, but if you want to draw a shadow cast from harsh lighting, best use cell shading
I myself use both cel and soft shading on my illustrations and i think it adds a bit more realism to your drawing ^^

Maybe try doing 2 drawings from the same sketch, with cell and soft shading, then decide which you prefer?
