Sometimes I think about how as artists we always hear that you have to have amazing anatomy/body proportions
Yes learning anatomy is important and you should learn it but then look at certain cartoons and movies like Disney for example and how they use anatomy:
The characters proportions are very exaggerated and they aren’t realistic at all
Yet they still work
I’ve spent so long trying to work on getting anatomy perfect that I never though about how some of the best character designs come from characters who have exaggerated proportions
Even when I try to design characters with different body types I have difficulty in making them look any different than another character besides the hair or clothes or any smaller details
I may want to look into studying this kind of stuffMay 30, 2021

What I think is to be able to stylize characters, you need to know anatomy to know what and why you are doing. They are just not randomly being exaggerated.

•i see what you mean !! i kind of have the same issue where i’ve studied anatomy very hard and cant bring myself to exaggerate or stylise too much because it has to look « perfect ». but actually i feel like learning anatomy is the first step, and the second one would be to learn how to detach yourself from the rules you learned and create something more unique (with exaggerated proportions for example). i feel like this is a very difficult learning process because even when a body is super stylized, the artist behind the drawing still has a good grasp of anatomy rules and bent these rules in a way to suit their style... idk if this makes sense haha but what helps me is to study the way other artists stylize their bodies ! see what rules they apply, how they change the anatomy, and so on !! a lot of trial and error too haha
