I wonder. How would someone depict dance in an artwork without making it look like some kind of model pose?

Check out Wassily Kandinsky. Using music as inspiration for abstract and representational painting. If you relate to dance, think of the movement of the song. Is it flowing, circular or maybe static and rigid? The use of colour and it's shifts, to move the eye and it's attention. Composition can be a dance. How your subject fits on the page and whether it invites more exploration or if it invites to turn the page. Example being, a character twirling in the centre of the page versus, a character flipping off an edge and out of frame.

• Focus on the dynamic movements, the ones where balance and gravity are not the focus, where they cannot exist if it's a pose.
• But also if you want contemporary dance, even the ones posed are usually super powerful with lights effects, good angle and composition.
• Go for constrasts if you do it in colors (bright, black and white, opposite, quantity, quality, saturation, temperature of colors, ....) it can express movement.
• speed lines, etc... Depending of your style.
• For the whole art, try to avoid pyramid composition with a straight angle of shot. Choose instead to try with a really high or low angle shot. The point of view and the composition brings movement, you can change it by making your pyramid tilted to a direction or reversed, or a spiral composition, etc...

Secondary motion! I learned that from animation, although the technical term might be drag.
It essentially refers to the delay of the movement of appendages on a main body like how hair will follow the same path as the head but with a bit of delay or how flags could follow a the movement of a swaying pole. I've read the other comments too, but hopefully this also helps somehow!

•I would try use a dynamic pose, but have the fabric be what shows the movement. It's important not just use any stock photo as a reference as some might not translate well into dance. Use diffenent movements in arms and legs while you also make sure there is a type of balance to the pose. Think of the line of action.
Clothing can help a lot. If you have a dress you can create the illussion of moving if the body seems to move to the left but the clothing have yet to folloe so it's still on the right but try follow.

Use video references! I learned that from Ethan Becker on YouTube. It's super helpful for all types of action poses.

A good indication for movement would be clothing or hair. Depends on the style maybe some blurred or lost edges.
