I struggle a lot with the usage of lighting and highlights. I do use references from time to time but for some reason it really looks off and just ruins the drawing so I don't put any most of the time. I've been trying a watercolor brush and an airbrush to make them but they just overlap with the other layers and make the drawing look all smudgy. I'm not very sure what colors to use either. avoid pure white! go a little warmer or cooler than just a “lighter” tone of the same color. i usually go in with a harder brush and erase into or airbrush out from it for a fade. I find it easier to start at the highest value i want it to be and adjust it down rather than build up to it

You could always use brush that’s more of an ink pen if you don’t wanna smudge it. Any bright color can make a good highlight in the right place, but color modes are your friend in digital art. Just make it on one of the layers that seems to brighten colors and mess with color adjustment tools for a bit.
