as was said before. it's a way of expression. someone likes a character/thing? they can express that thing AND their gender/sexuality. That's as simple as it is really

•I think its kinda simple; queer person likes a thing, makes a background with their pride flag’s colors + a favorite character or the media’s logo.
It’s not actually supposed to be a reflection of the musical (although I’m sure there are people who do actually have that intention) I think it’s usually more so a reflection of the self in the things they enjoy + who they are. Some people would say that the things you like can define you so, yeah!
