I'm trying to do the same! I've been trying to see how fast I can draw characters, and then take the most recognizable pieces of their design and focus more on them than anything else! I think mine is going pretty well like that!

Best way I’ve seen it done is to take time. Charcoal and paper, life drawings and studies. 10 minute drawings, 5 minute drawings, 30 second gestural drawings.
You get a feel for how to draw things in their simplest forms.
That way you can be sure that when you abstract your work that it comes naturally and with that time you have taken, youll find you work a lot faster.

•Less is more. That's the most important thing. The thing with animation is that the more junk a character has the more difficult it is to animate. So even if you want to add a ton of realistic shading (for example), I suggest you don't (not to mention the shading and drawing will clash).
I also suggest looking at cartoons for an idea on how to simplify characters. You can look at anime too but I find that they often don't give a fuck about what is and isn't easy to animate (especially if there's a good budget). You don't have to copy them, but study how they build their characters and see what you can do.
Simplify shapes- particularly body shapes. Cartoons rely more on different silhouettes to distinguish characters (I'm sure you've noticed some cartoons have a variety of characters of different shapes, sizes, heights, postures, and so on and they're early distinguishable.) Because of this, you don't need to draw a hyper-realistic human with accurate proportions.
I hope this helps, if you have any questions, let me know. I pretty much just gave you a cliff notes version of what you can do so I can elaborate if you want me to.
