Laika
Quick sketch i did and i really liked how it turned out.....also it gives me the opportunity to rant about her, so no need to read if you're not interested or easily affected by animal mistreatment and death.Laika was the first animal sent into orbit during the race to the moon. After the success of sputnik 1 (the first satellite sent into orbit), oct 4. 1957, Nikita Chruschtschow planned for a second mission. However since they were under pressure and the original plans for sputnik 2 were too complex to achieve they cut corners. Also, Laika wasn't actually an especially well trained dog; she was a stray dog, picked up, trained some and was supposed to be "a sacrifice for science". Her mission was a one-way ticket to space to start propaganda. Her death was therefore not a surprise only how fast she died. Probably due to overheating and stress she passed away between 5 and 7 hours after sputnik 2's start. Still apparently her mission brought great insight and was seen as a win for future missions.
I'm just really sorry for this dog, especially knowing her death could've been avoided, if there wasn't the time pressure of the race to the moon.Sep 28, 2021
