The Able-Bodied Footman
The papers called him her Able-Bodied Footman.He wasn’t anything of the kind, mostly because he wasn’t paid, but he wouldn’t want to be paid for his services, anyway. Services which were varied and numerous but pertaining mostly to her, which was why the papers called him her Able-Bodied Footman in the first place. He liked it, but he didn’t tell her that. A footman knows his place.
She fought with him a lot because of it. Because of his place, and knowing it or not knowing it. Sometimes he’d let her abuse him, smiling all the while because it annoyed her so. She seemed so confused about her own anger, after all, and picked on him for a hundred things, each less important than the next and none inspiring him to change. He could take it, and take her, but on the days she wouldn’t let him, then he wouldn’t smile, and she would have to pretend it didn’t bother her.Apr 21, 2021
