— cw: paranoia + stalking

there have been an influx of articles recently that ive read relating to "gen-z" and effects social media has had on them, and subsequently how they are counteracting social media by incorporating healthier habits or quitting social media all together. and while the effects are something to be talked about, especially when it comes to young girls who seem to be effected the most (based off of the data that Facebook(Meta), who owns Instagram, that the whistleblower released) but i frankly find a lot of these issues to pale in comparison to the actual dangers of social media when it is used in such a way.

i personally can not continue to use social media in the way i would like due to people consistently overstepping their boundaries with me. i have been stalked by extended family members since i could even use the internet, followed by private investigators, and have had complete strangers online ask about my relationship to my partner when i have rarely, if ever, disclosed any of that information. i have never used my real name online, rarely posted my face online. i was always acutely aware of the consequences. even now, after things have died down for the most part, i can't rest. i can't help myself, in a way.

i have paranoid tendencies but have never been formally diagnosed with anything, and those symptoms, whatever they are, have gotten worse after each instance. which is a shame. i like the internet and like the people ive met and the conversations ive had but in my opinion the negatives outweigh the positives in this case and im done. i should've deleted my accounts a long time ago. i don't like to run away and disappear, especial when i haven't done anything wrong and would like to just be in contact with my friends. but this is one of too many nights that i have woken up feeling that sinking feeling of dread and heart racing. i don't think my concerns are irrational, to say the least.

goodbye.
