I see you went with the blurred background approach, which is a totally acceptable approach!

I looked through your gallery real quick but I see that you don't do backgrounds all that often so honestly my advice would be to just practice doing them. Maybe try redrawing some backgrounds form the shows you like (both animated and live action, live action even more so) or redrawing photos of landscapes/cityscapes or interior spaces.

If you find that too boring add your characters in the middle of it at the end and try to make them look like they belong in that enviorment. Also a great exercise!

As for the piece itself it looks nice! I like the colors, the character looks cute and I love the over all vibe of the piece!

The complaint I have (that sorta relates to the background) is that the shading is a bit too soft/airbrush-y. Not all of it, like the edge of the character on the right side is just soft enough but not too soft, and it gives it that glow-like effect you are clearly going for. But on the left side the hair shading is way too soft. The texture of the hair is completely lost under the soft airbrush, which makes it lose its form and look flat. It gives it a blur effect and because the background is blurred as well it makes the hair blend into the background, not in a good way.

But yeah you're doing good! Keep it up!
It's completely understandable. School takes always a lot of time. ^^

Also your drawing looks really good! Looks super cute. ^^ But I don't have any ideas for backgrounds...sorry xD
