Revisiting childhood movies: Kung Fu Panda
"The Big Fanboy That Could", or alternatively, "Big Panda, Big Dreams"
I say, these fight scenes are some of the best in all of animation, especially the bridge scene. Memes aside, it's genuinely great. As for the actual plot and characters? Ehhhh. My main issues are these:
-The humor is really hit and miss. Some jokes work, but those were the jokes that didn't revolve around Po when he's not fighting.
-Besides the old Kung Fu masters and my man Ping, the characters weren't all that interesting either. The Furious Five are cool, but they weren't really distinct from one another. And Po...Po is Po. You either like him or you don't.
-The plot is pretty basic as well, but with enough kung fu flair to have it stand out.
I don't know, this movie felt a lot more awesome when I was a kid. Then again, that goes for a lot of the films in this series of essays. Thinking that I'd enjoy the sequel more.
Xtra Notes
-The 2D animation is simply stunning. Makes you wish that DreamWorks was still doing 2D.
-Ah yes, the ol "My dad doesn't understand my dreams!" trope.
-Everything that Oogway says can be put on a motivational poster, and he's by far the best character of the entire movie.
-Long amounts of stairs...everyone's worst enemy.
-Here we have the Furious Five: Mrs. Smith, O-Ren, one half of Mr. Show, Jackie Chan, and Seth Rogen being Seth Rogen.
-Also, a fun fact: the guy who voiced the fictionalized version of the title man in Jackie Chan Adventures also voiced Monkey in the Nickelodeon cartoon based on this movie, where Jackie Chan voiced this same character. Mind blowing.
-Finally, all of the souls in that jar can finally be free!
-I miss Michael Clarke Duncan, he had a great distinctive voice and was excellent in The Green Mile. :(
-The whole sequence of Po getting his panda butt handed to him by the training equipment is also representative of this month not being good to me.
-"Yeah, you don't belong here, so...if you could get out and leave this place, that would be great."
-D'awwww, young Tai Lung was adorable.
"Screw what Oogway said, he's not the Dragon Warrior! Ugh!"
-For a 2008 film, the 3D animation is quite impressive.
-Almond cookies...delicious.
-Once again, these fight scenes are really friggin cool!
-"There's no secret ingredient? What a ripoff!"
-The final fight is not only epic, but also has some great physical comedy.
-Skadoosh.
-And so peace returned to the land...for now.
-This version of a song that was used heavily in the film's marketing was making everyone go kung fu fighting again.
