Fairy Fox Dance -- Part 1
The trees sighed softly in the wind.
The air was warm, and smelled of the approaching thunderstorm.
A drop of rain, then a little sprinkle, and finally, a full-blown shower buffeted the forest.
Jag-eun Ugi had been watching this build up from her small wooden hut. She sat on her old bamboo porch, the rain and wind blowing in her face.
Her older brother sat next to her, his head cocked back to look at the tree canopy.
The both of them had pale skin and long, silvery-white hair.
"You know, mother and father have been talking quite a bit about your future." he said.
"What have they been saying?" she asked him with a slight edge to her tone.
"Well... they say that it's high time that you start preparing for marriage." he muttered, "They have already selected a bride for me.".
Jag-eun set her jaw. "When I marry, I shall select my own husband. Although I don't feel ready, I would rather bite the bullet and settle down than marry an unfamiliar man." she growled.
Her brother chuckled. She sighed and stared into the vast woods.
"When will the hunting party be back? They're already so late." Jag-eun wondered aloud. Her brother shrugged.
"I don't know. You know how carried away our tribe gets when they hunt. A fox just can't resist a good chase." he said.
A closely held secret of these people was that they were actually a race of fairies; they could turn into beautiful white foxes. That is how they hunted. That is how they played. As foxes. They hid their fox forms from the city folk who lived not five miles away.
The tribe and the city people had an agreement: the city folk of Korea would not touch their precious forest lands, nor hunt the animals within. It was illegal to capture the 'fairy foxes' for fur or to keep as pets.
But... that day...
That law was repealed.May 3, 2022
