ArtistAlways use f**king reference for your art, ALWAYS!!! Even if you need to make it yourself, do it!!! Have a good reference library!!!
I mean while you sketch ideas or doodle things you, probably will be okay without reference.
BUT!!! When it comes to creating a whole project (like : illustration or comics or manga or characters or whatever) - reference is ESSENTIAL!!! Don't you ever feel like you must draw everything from memory, NO! You collect the reference and then draw stuff using it!!!
Time you spent gathering reference and doing research is the quality time that will allow you to create a truly wonderful artworks!
