Revisiting childhood movies: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

"So this is what dolphins are actually like on the inside."

Man, the books were friggin lit when I read them as a kid. A good amount of it prolly went over my head, but they were nonetheless a ball. It's been a while since I read them, so I can't say whether this adaptation holds up as well as the books, but as its own film? There's some enjoyment to be had with the performances, but it's decent.

Xtra Notes:
-Another great transition to the start of the film from the Spyglass logo, except instead of a cartoon that's better than the movie, we've got dolphin footage.
-I don't get how this song was nominated for worst song at the 2005 Stinkers Bad Movie Awards, it's real catchy!
-Get ready for some Stephen Fry narration, cuz it keeps coming back.
-And here we have our main cast: Bilbo Baggins, Most Definitely, New Girl, Justin Hammer, and two Harry Potter cast members in one.
-Imagine meeting who you thought was gonna be your girl for the first time only to have Sam Rockwell win her heart instead. Sucks bro.
-These Vogons are suitably ugly, and we can thank Jim Henson's Creature Shop for that.
-This film really hates galactic crabs for some reason.
-"You can't be a president without a whole brain." True dat.
-These two kids really didn't take 42 for an answer to life, the universe, and everything to the point where they turned themselves into mice to dig into a regular human's brain for the question. This is a certified "What in the hell were you thinking?" moment.
-I found a way to make this film inventive: make the human characters yarn versions of themselves. No other movie has ever done that.
-Oh snap, It's John Malkovich in his most daring role to date, well, at least until Birdbox.
-"The fate of Zaphod's other head remains unknown."
-So not only is Zaphod an idiot, he's so dumb that he unknowingly caused earth's destruction. Wicked.
-The whale falling down to the ground is so iconic that there was a whole shirt of it. And I'm a proud owner of that shirt.
-"Have you ever tried yoga?" says Zaphod before Trisha jumps into the portal. Why yes, I have tried yoga. Should probably do it some more.
-Enter Bill Nighy as the head of planet reconstruction with an unfortunately goofy name.
-Earth Number 2, the Ride: now operating at Disneyland.
-Oh yeah, this is technically a Disney film. Should we add this to the list of adaptations of books that Disney failed to get right or nah?
-These kids won't take happiness as a solution to their quest, fame is the real goal here. What a misguided goal that was, huh?
-A restaurant at the end of the universe? What are they trying to do, set up a sequel that never got made?
-Douglas Adams left us too soon. :(
-While there was no sequel, another adaptation in the form of a TV series is being made for Hulu. When will it come out? No one knows...
