Highly dependent on the group! Mithiell mentioned Fantasy High by Dimension 20, that is an excellent example of how great DND can be. Find a good DM you trust, they probably know people that will be chill to play with. If you are ready to dive head first into a lot of reading and memorization of mechanics (but also want to have the most fun) then I suggest going with a spell casting class (probably sorcerer/warlock for first time players)... But if you want to learn things more gradually go with a barbarian, rogue, or fighter. Arcane trickster rogue if you want to get a taste of spell casting. Alternatively, you could choose any class and take the magic initiate feat to gain a bit of magic. I highly suggest reading through as many classes/subclasses and species (or races depending on which version you play) as you can before settling on a character idea. One of my favourite characters that I've played was an aberrant mind sorcerer changeling with the mobile feat, quicken spell, twin spell, subtle spell, and heightened spell (if my memory is correct). A lot of funny tricks you can pull off with that sort of set up, but it's still pretty simple.

DND is a ttrpg (table top role-playing game) in which you enter into a fantasy world, explore, create bonds, and accomplish great things. It's a bit difficult to explain in a short comment with little interaction, but if you are interested then I could probably explain this better in messages and all. I am the DM for my own group, and homebrew quite a bit, so I do understand the game quite well. I hope you enjoy DND and find a great group to play with!
The others already did a good job describing the game, so I'll put some resources/links here~

Critical Role, one of the big D&D groups who play their campaigns on video (big long medieval fantay setting stories, just finished their third campaign, would reccomend starting with C2). They also have a series of short videos going over game rules and how to fill out a character sheet, called Handbooker Helper

And of course Jo Cat with his Crap Guide to DnD, satire, but very fun and nice to get a light hearted overview of stuff

DnD is super fun when you get a good group together. There's a wide variety of TTRPGs you can get into, DnD is the most popular though. Fate Core is one that my group plays, it has more emphasis on the narrative aspects, less on combat simulation.

Youtube series recommendation: Dingo Doodles' "Fools Gold Campaign", an animatic retelling of their DnD campaign. After 6 years it's nearing the ending.
I have absolutely loved playing D&D. It’s such a fun and creative game but there are rules and structure which I personally like.

The game can technically be about anything but most games focus on a group of adventures who are trying to solve a mystery or problem (usually the problem ends up being a big bad) and the setting is usually a fantasy world sometime vaguely set in the Middle Ages Europe. The fun thing about the game though is you can technically modify it to take place in any setting. Not feeling Middle Ages well how about ancient Egypt or a vaguely 1800s vampire land. Not liking ether of those, how about try modern day New York City! The game has endless possibilities.

Now as far as playing your gonna need at least 3 people, 1 to be the game master and 2 to be the player characters. The game masters or dungeon master is gonna be your narrater, non-player characters, and your enemy. The best DMs are the ones who are already familiar with the game but anyone can be a DM. To play you’ll need character sheets, access to the rules of the game (if no one in your group has them or you can’t buy a copy you can find them pirated online or rent them from the library. There’s also a free basic rule book you can get digitally but it doesn’t quite have all the rules), and a set of polyhedral dice (you can use digital ones if needed but I like physical dice) and a meeting location. This can be online or in person. To start a game someone will need to create the story or you can use a guide book. You can find a free digital one on dnd beyond.
well, i've only played a couple of games, but it's a lot of fun! it's an old school tabletop RPG game where you have to complete missions with other players. you can literally do whatever stupid thing you can think of, the dice will tell you the result! you roll different types of dice (d20, d6 etc) based on what you want to do, and depending on the number that comes out things will go terribly, well or perfectly.
