We Once Had Names project sketch
In January, I started work on a whole new series, though to be fair, Im like a woman possessed with it XD It has its roots in works like Tenchi Muyo and TF2 (what a wild inspiration base XD), but I wanted to take a crack at another primarily ensemble cast but with adult men, which isn’t my strongest suit XD (also action oriented and gun centric), but its exciting and new and Im excited about the challenge.What is “We Once Had Names” about? Doc joins a band of mercenaries called The Anything Store, giving them all a very experimental drug for immortality in exchange for his safety. Being a natural born immortal himself, he becomes part of a very, VERY motley crew, where each member has a very particular set of skills to provide any and all clients with “anything” they need, with a price.
Each main character has their role/profession as their name (e.g. Doctor, Sniper, Trickster, Assassin, Captain, etc), which is where the series name comes from. I find it fascinating that, for whatever reason, these men have identities that are based on what they “do” rather than “who” they are; their names at once are everything they are, an identity, but at the same time, they’re not a name at all.
Of the main cast, the Doctor/Doc has occupied mental real estate for a couple months, and Ive probably drawn him the most and more than a monthly challenge for a long time. So expect to see A LOT of Doc XD He’s so satisfying to draw for me. A definite comfort character (i havent apologized for the backstory trauma XD).
The quote in the sketch was one I found that also influenced the design of the maidens of black water in the 5th Fatal Frame game; its a beautiful quote that seemed to fit Doc well.Mar 18, 2025
