It isn’t like I’d been expecting to be repulsed
The wind turns and blows my hair around my skull, same as it sweeps up Decay’s, feather-light over his back and the portion of his face that isn’t sunken into the ground. As close as a step away I venture to his corpse; close as I dare without testing myself or the shred of trust granted to me. The grasses under my feet begin to carry themselves to Decay as well, over and alongside him in sheets that grow thicker as they feed. And… that will have to be enough.I rub my knees, kneeling, staring down at the gently changing colors in Decay’s fingers. They pulse softly like an aurora would swim through the sky.
It won’t be like I imagined. I know that.
My eyes follow the line of his slender wrist up to where it disappears beneath the fur strewn over his back. Where it has slipped away, it reveals the slope of a shoulder blade; much of the curvature is lost to the pocketing yellow that swells so voraciously inside him, but the suggestion is still there.
And his face… bare but for the brows and long lashes that jut over a pair of large, glassy umber eyes, and with open lips just yielding the last remnant of their pink tinge.
It isn’t like I’d been expecting to be repulsed by whatever I dug out of that hole. It’s just that… I hadn’t considered that I might find him particularly pretty, either.
So tenderly—by millimeters at a time—tall grasses and shoots swell underneath Decay’s side to push him by shoulder and hip onto his back.
A human. A man.
I bite my cheek.
