Normally, she would have done everything she could to defy the Institute, to spit in their faces, on their stupid protocol sheets. But she felt oddly connected with them in that moment, almost as if they were on the same side.
"Since the expansion of the ISS, exit signs had been installed to direct crew members to safety in case of an emergency. While it made sense to have an evacuation path in place, it made for an oddly ironic image. What would she actually do once she got to the exit? Float down to Earth?
"It wasn't like there would be much earth left for her to return to. Not in about three hours, anyway. Humankind had been hoping to contact another intelligent species, only to send intergalactic missiles tearing into their own solar system. A mission, built on the hopes and dreams of (most of) the population, only to be returned with the worst possible outcome. Oh, the irony...
"So, Mari simply floated there, sipping her electrolyte-enhanced soda, waiting and hoping that the Institute she so despised knew what they were doing. Hoping, against her will, that they could keep her and her uncle safe. There was nothing she could do, anyway...'worry is not preparation', as the old saying goes. She didn't know she was crying until she saw her tears sparkling in the brilliant light of the cupola."
