Higugma
Rory has changed. In more ways than one. Literally? He changed into a vampire and nobody knew how to cope with a vampiric child, but Rory kept on living. As if it never happened. Metaphorically? He thinks he has lost his heart. He's unsure if it died, still rotting away in his ribcage, or if it just vanished into nothingness. But he moves on, not knowing what to do after. Physically, he's becoming unrecognizable too. Everyone reckons that he'd grow up to become a fine young lady, he thinks otherwise, he hasn't seen his reflection since he was 7 after all.So when mommy and daddy stopped loving each other, he was unfazed. He avoided meeting their gaze at dinner when he couldn't lock himself in his room. He knew her eyes would be red, cheeks stained with tears while dad fuck off to who-knows-where. His brother looks sad, confused about their situation too. Rory could almost feel that pang in his chest. Almost. He excuses himself and pats his brother on the back. It's the only thing he could do. He doesn't know how to approach his mom and he can hear the rats scurrying in his room. Fresh blood, maybe it's just what he needs to clear his mind.
Time passes and he wakes up to a soft knock on his door.
“Girl? Are you awake? Could I stay here with you?”
He's unsure, his room's a mess. Clothes and crumpled up papers pile up in various corners, his walls scribbled over with paint, pens and pencils littered all over the floor and the blood still fresh on his mattress. He could get punished for this. He should get punished for this. He looks at her once more and— there it is again. That pang of something. It twists and grips at nothing. What should be nothing.
“Yes ma”
He lets her in and she lies on his mattress, and he sits beside her. They both said nothing, soft sobs and a bated breath filled the room. He was scared of opening his mouth, of choking on words he didn't know how to say.
“Neng?”
“Ano ma?”
“Never forget higugma, you're full of it. I know you are. So whatever happens, never let anything take that from you your dad. Not this thing between us. because it's yours and yours alone”
Reprieve, and it's like he could finally breathe again. He feels like crying but he doesn’t
“Okay ma”
He replies and then pats her shoulder as she finally drifts off to sleep leaving him to ponder over her words until dawn

Also there is a draft version of this attachment writing that I scrapped since I submitted this piece to an art gallery and my writing exceeded the word limit. Someday I'll draw an attachment piece for that since I think it could stand on its own idkMar 26, 2026
