Just learn Semiotics. Really cool that people really think so deeply about this type of stuff. Like I always just think of a stop sign as "oh well thats just a stop sign" but to really think that you know, that a red octagon doesnt actually associate with "Stop" and it was only society that made them have association is pretty neat and really shows the power we have as humans to take something, anything, and give it an actual meaning. Or how we are so adopted to know how smoke = a fire nearby or puddles = water or rain was nearby to where it just makes logical sense that they are connected. Or how a dog is just a dog but also you can separate them making an icon of a dog and the idea of dogginess Or the grouping of dogs because just labeling one dog "dog" isnt fully true because "dog" is related to multiple dogs and not just your dog.
Its cool to know that art isnt just beautiful but its also a system of signs, how identity isnt just one immediantly fixed thing and instead its a well thought out symbol that took years to finalize
Like looking at a horse sure it's a horse but
Theres the icon, the long animal with long legs and hooves instead of feet and has a tail and neys.
Then there is the index, the loud and fast clacking of the hooves or a loud ney and heavy and weird breathing sounds usually points you towards "must be a horse, a speeding horse"
And then the symbol, aka the name that technically doesnt actually associate with the animal but instead society made it so they are actually connectedJul 21, 2025
