Wear some sort of fabric glove to prevent charcoal getting to places on your canvas/paper.

I see everyone gives a lot of advice about the dangers of it, hah! Being someone who likes ink and pencil, I loooooved how delicate or absolutely black coal can be. One technique is smudging it with your finger deliberately but I remember not liking how that looks, personally, (kinda blah, messy, even gray with no texture..), maybe I didn't explore blending it with tools too deeply, I guess. I'm sure there's something cool to be found there. I just went: 
at the deep expressive abyssal black lines. And once you put something down you cannot remove it anymore, like ink, which I find interesting and it forces to make decisions...

Cotton tips or tissue paper works good for blending charcoal. Also use a fixative afterwards to prevent smudging your finished work

Jokes aside, it's super messy like everyone else is saying, I actually prefer conte crayon for this reason
It's a lot like charcoal but a little less messy

secondly don’t be afraid to really break the charcoal, you really gotta play around with hard/light you push the charcoal

•Sorry but the only thing I remember is: be very aware of where you place your hands, coal gets everywhere, and pay attention to how your clothes can potentially brush against the work and smudge it. It's a bit merciless that way, but super fun.
