guys i need some help w this
my username + signature on every art acc i have is mary hikari (bc my real name is maria luz, wich literally means maria light, and hikari is the japanese word for light)
when i started posting my drawings my irl japanese friend suggested this bc it looked cool, but now i notice that lots of people mistaken me for being japanese even though i'm not
do you think using hikari is some kind of asianfishing? should i change?

No worries. You literally put Mary in your name. It's people's choice if they assume or misunderstand. I mean it's not like you're creating a fake persona with a fake life story for profit and gain or revenge. If you are just posting your art and just being you, I see no fault tbh. Not to mention your friend suggested the name. I think it's cute your name in a way represents and symbolizes your friendship.

•I’m only speaking as a cultural fruit salad as it were. Race and identity are very complicated. As it stands, the name’s history and circumstances aren’t mean-spirited. It’s a keepsake from the time you took to discuss language with a friend and that’s really cool. But in a new light it might seem a little outdated.
Bottom line though is that you have not so far gone as to cheapen or pervert the culture so with this next step, maybe just do what you feel works best to represent yourself as an individual.

•Imo if that is persona you feel comfortable with, you should keep it. People should follow you for your art not nationally or ethicaty anyways. Art should be freedom of expression. As long as you don't use that name to post offensive are racist things, I think it is fine.
