In Sardinia, during the celebration of the conflict between animal instincts and human intellect, they used to wear two types of masks - Su Boe (the ox) and Su Merdule (ox guardian). But women were excluded from this kind of activity, even if there was a Matriarchal culture. The most important female figures were the Great Mother and the Janas. These ones, often mistaken for fairies, were magical women that helped the ones in need. They used to live inside the Nuraghe castles.
