The trading post
A few hours later the sun had finally risen and Videsse could see the rivers of his tribe in the distance. The water gleamed as the sun highlighted every wave revealing its texture and purity. It was a beautiful morning, it was likely his old tribemates were fishing and training, he would have to see them after his business with Tarik was concluded. The green foothills unfolded before him underneath a deep blue sky accompanied by the sound of rushing water and a light breeze. Videsse loved the riverhills. He had been to many places since he began working for Tarik, but this was the home of him and his tribe. It also housed many trading posts where various tribes came to conduct trades and host meetings. The largest of these trading posts was visible on the horizon, a massive pillar extending over the hills illuminated on the top by a massive fire. It was known as “Tsiyi’s torch”, a monument to the ancient dreamer and the pride of the Riverwalker tribe. He was starting to grow tired from his journey, but he knew it would not be much longer. He began to think about why he left home and his tribe again. Did he make the right decision? Was he being too proud to not face his failure? No, he thought, it wasn’t that; the failure only proved what he already knew, he didn’t belong. A wave of melancholy hit him, a familiar sensation, one he learned to accept. His thoughts were interrupted by the abrupt laughter of children just up ahead.
The Riverhill’s trading post was manned by the Suncoat tribe, their warriors kept a watchful eye over the post to ensure trades are conducted peacefully and to protect from any beasts who may grow desperate enough to approach their mounds. The Suncoat tribe had recently discovered how to work a dark yellow metal into armor and weapons, an old technique thought lost to the shattering wars. Their spears were sharp and sturdy and their arrows struck harder and pierced further than those of any other tribe. Videsse’s simple wooden staff looked like a plaything by comparison.
Several mounds characterized the trading post where goods were stored and meetings were held. Videsse knew that Tarik managed the mound in the northwest corner of the outpost. He acknowledged the guards respectfully on his way there; they were however preoccupied with a man claiming his goods were being undervalued by a Cerdavean tradesman. Such mundane disputes were typical of course. An old trader greeted Videsse happily, having recognized him from his frequent visits. The trading post was filled with sounds of business, cheerful conversation, and playing children.Aug 2, 2022
