question for comic artists:
would it be easier to focus on doing all of the line art, coloring and shading and such for one panel, then moving on to the next once finished or focusing on a specific step, and doing it for all of the panels? i'm so sorry if this came off as confusing, i'm trying my best to put this question into words haha

I took a comics class supplied by a university near me and they said don’t do each panel one by one, do it in “passes” or steps. They also said do not do your cover illustration first (which I did, oops)

Im going to say that most people are going to do it step-by-step for a whole page/strip depending on the format. Theyll sketch, line, colour etc the entire portion in one go. HOWEVER if you find working panel by panel to be better for you, you will achieve the same result in the end. It also depends on how you plan to composite your pages/strips because some people do draw every panel as their own canvas especially if they do both scroll and page format since its easier to composite a page that way. But typically, the majority of comic/webcomic/manga artists are doing everything in a sketch > lineart > colour/tone > finishing touches/polish kind of process.

I like to do it step by step :)
Finish the sketches, then line art, then I even color step by step sorta, like I'll fill in one character at a time and fill all the parts of their hair first, then skin, then clothes. Then next character... then I shade the characters individually, then bgs, and then I do atmosphere lighting and shadows.

I find it easier to do each step, it gets me in the groove and makes it more consistent in each panel imo

I don't really make comics but if I did I feel like I would do each step. Like when I make animations I do a sketch for all the frames. Then when that's done I do line art and then color and then render. I feel it would make sense to do the same for comics to ensure consistency in how everything looks
