My participation for @godiva_ghoul ´s DTIYS ! Meet Poppy the Demonic Pierrot.
I was just explaining to a friend yesterday that Pierrot is a specific clown archetype in a Romantism mouvement type of storytelling.
Pierrot is the introvert, moony sad clown. He’s melancholic and dreams of better days while gazing at the stars.
He’s counterpart is Harlequin, the colourful, full of life and joy, happy clown. But just like Pierrot, Harlequin has his own existential meltdowns – cause nobody is ever gonna be happy for real in Romantism – and Harlequin usually drowns his sorrow in unhealthy, flashy coping mechanisms.
They’re both pining over the same heteronormative love interest, I know her as Colombine (would translate into Dovey) and usually by the end they both die.
Best example of these archetypes in a story that comes to mind is Les Caprices de Mariane, Celio being Pierrot and Octave being Harlequin.
Please do correct me if I’m wrong somewhere though, that’s all stuff I remember from lit classes in french high schoolApr 29, 2021
