It is when you study an artist or work of art by attempting to recreate it by paying close attention to the style, design and techniques used. It was started by the first modern french art classes. After the french Revolution, one of the palaces was opened up and the students would study the works that came before and learn how to paint by studying their art and trying to recreate it. It's good for developing your style, and learning all sorts of different techniques.
I want to know too 🥲 all I know is that it’s really specific to the topics the artists want to study & improve on (eg. Looking at folds of clothes to learn how folding works -> apply to drawing)
