Psychotic depression is a form of depression that causes hallucinations. Usually in the form of shadows, and warped perceptions. It can also cause auditory hallucinations. A common symptom of psychotic depression, and depression, is lack of sleep. If lack of sleep or insomnia exist with psychotic depression it can amplify the hallucinations. There usually is no delusion behind the hallucinations.
