I'm curious how many people here are just hobbyists or hoping to break into the industry or go freelance? And if so what specific area?Apr 15, 2021

I somehow managed to make my dream come true, I work as a costume and character designer at a huge themepark. I also do smaller jobs for film as character and concept artist
For everyone here who wants to become a professional in industry, my personal advice is to create a strong portfolio. Take your time and draw as much as you can, but only pick the best of your artworks for your portfolio
I loved creating my one. I put so much effort into it, and it worked out very well for me!

•I’m mostly a hobbyist, but I do have a RedBubble shop where people can buy my art on things like phone cases, shirts, etc., and I do have commissions open most of the time as well. Career-wise, I currently work in a lab, and hope to get into medical school eventually.
•
•Right now I am exploring the media-engineering field as a employee, though I hope to become a freelancer one magical day. I want to specialize in concept art or storyboarding but what really itches me is to make a game with friends soon !
•
•I’m just a hobbyist, I plan to go into neuroscience for my career instead. Maybe I’ll do commissions or something in the future but I enjoy drawing and posting just for the sake of it, and I find it easier to be motivated when I don’t have to think about profiting off of it

•I want to work in animation and my own personal projects as a way to sustain myself. Currently though I’m just building up my skills to get to that point. As well as potential gaining a following for my personal projects on here.
I’m not sure what area of the industry I would specialize in cause rn what I can draw is limited to mostly faces and character art.

•I really want to go into Video Game concept art! Specifically character design but I’d be happy with just a foot in the door !!

•Hobby ~
the main reason I'm still drawing I'm a writer. I like to be able to visualize my OCs and story stuff
I think eventually I want to sell my books, but for my first few I've decided to put them up for free
I want people to enjoy my works and my worldbuilding and I think more people might read it if it's free! So I would classify both as hobbies, but I wouldn't complain getting some extra pocket money from commissions and books sales ~

•I have considered art as a career before realizing I preferred it as a hobby and a way to relax.
•
•Currently more of a hobby, but working towards something more. Like animation or concept design.
•
•I desperately want to be in the animation industry or webtoon industry
Unfortunately I'm studying something unrelated in Uni
i'm so frustrated
(although i started my own webtoon already!) :)

•Bit of both. I’m a professional tattoo artist and that’s my main bread and butter. I also do illustration and painting, sometimes just for myself and sometimes for commissions or collaborative projects.
•
•Hobbist!
I'm studiyng medicine, so I've not a lot of time, but I love drawing since I was little, and It would be nice If more people liked my art

Sometimes I think it would be fun to do some freelance work

Just drawing for fun :) i would love it if someone someday liked my art enough to ask for a comission, but I'm not thinking of making art as a career as I'm studying engineering and I also love it
•
•Right now just doing art for fun and a few commissions here and there. I have a different full time job. Adult life never goes as one plans it lol so that’s it for now.
•
•Full time artist, but I studied Applied Geophysics. Currently freelancing but I’ve had a few interviews with some top companies like Sony pictures Animation and the likes, but I guess the distance is a current problem.
Oh!! Nigerian by way.

•
I am a hobbyist atm, but I am trying to develop my skills, because I am extremely interested in storytelling. Even if I won’t change careers to art, I need art to feel fulfilled
•
•Hobbyist! Studied games art & 3D animation, realized I actually don't wanna work in the industry and make art a job. Now I work in finance and occasionally make merch and do art commissions on the side whenever the mood strikes :)
•
•I'm just drawing as a hobby and I don't really know what I want to become in the future tbh... but I definitely do consider and think about an "art related job"

•
•I'm a hobbyist, I got another job so I don't wanna be a freelancer. It's very nice to be just a hobbyist.
•
•I'm just a hobbyist. I wouldn't mind doing freelance work on the side but its not really what my dream career is even though I enjoy art.
•
•I’m a student currently but I’ve done some freelance in the past! Ideally I want to be a character designer in either the animation or video game industry, but just general visdev stuff always interests me.
•
•I’m a hobbyist at this moment, but my dream job is to run my own small art business where I’ll sell Prints, Stickers, and other merch. I also have an interest in graphic novels and animation.
•
•I'm a hobbyist as I study computer science and programming at uni. But I would love to do some freelance work in the future

•
•I'm a hobbyist & I also do some freelance work! Mostly character design stuff for smaller companies & startups
