Hi there! I'm new at digital art and I would like to try a free program in order to get used to it. I've heard some of them but I have no idea which one would be better for beginers. Can someone recommend me one?Apr 19, 2021

If you use an IPad or digital tablet, Ibis Paint is great!
For desktop, Krita is great and is similar to Photoshop, but if you don’t have a good computer it can often lag and crash on you
Medibang Paint and FireAlpaca are lightweight and similar to SAI. They’re basically the same app, but FireAlpaca does make it possible for animation.
If I had to choose, I would go with Medibang/FireAlpaca! It’s interface is pretty simple and easy to understand for those new at digital art ^^

Medibang and firealpaca are my first choices but i know that for the ipad people have been using ibis paint and if you have a spare couple of bucks procreate is HIGHLY worth the money.

If you're looking for a good, free program, I'd say go for Krita for sure. Krita was my first art program, and it works beautifully and is a great into into the layout and tools of a drawing program.

If you want a more comicy sharpie-style use GIMP. It has the best sharpie-tool I have ever used.
If you want just layers and have no other use for fancy stuff use paint.net. it's 20% of photoshop's features, but it's free and good to learn & understand the structure of layers & transparency in artworks.
If you DO have a little money saved, buy a lifetime licence of Affinity by Serif. It's 30-50 bucks depending if they have a sale or not, but you only buy it once and can use it forever. It's basically a photoshop clone with just small differences.

Medibang is what I suggest! I use it pretty reliably for the better part of three years before moving to procreate. My only strife was that it can’t handle larger canvases/many layers. If you don’t do complex pieces, this is no biggie.

Paint tool sai is really good for getting used to digital art, dunno if it is free or not but if you find the right tutorial you can find anything for free lol

I would highly recommend firealpaca!! It’s super beginner friendly but also has tools that make it competent enough that I STILL use it, however many years later. (I’ve never had it crash on me either!)

If you draw with phone or iPad/tablet (I think) I highly recommend Ibis Paint! It’s a great app and I’ve been using it for at least a year now :D

Krita! Super user friendly with fun brushes by default. Save a lot tho, it crashed on me a few times and even corrupted the files. Oh, also, use the "export" featute for saving jpgs/png. "Save" only .kra files or else you might loose them. I still love it tho
