Do you consider dude, man, bro, etc. as gender neutral terms?
Just curious of how many people think so, or don't think so.
Personally, I see them as gender neutral because in my school and at home while I was growing up, everyone called everyone this regardless of who you were, or who you were talking to.
But I want to know what other people think :3Aug 31, 2021

I see them as gendered terms (since they all are meant to refer to men) but I don’t mind being called those things!

•I use all three of these often with my friends (combination of enbys and girls) I see the as gender neutral.
•
•I’ll say that I’ve never had anyone use “man” on me but dude and bro are def gender neutral. Obv it depends on context but yeah, for the most part, neutral
•
•well, as a female I get often called as dude or bro by my male friends. This isn't offensive, to me at least it's comletely neutral, I would say :v also it's a privilege since most of the males don't call girls this way as I would assume they'd find it offensive

•Context is kinda important but
- if you're referring to a group of people, I don't really see "dude" or "guys" as only referring to men. It actually bothers me MORE that a coworker goes "dudes and dudettes" as a greeting. Im the only woman on the team. It's like... Intentionally singling me out? And my go to informal email greeting is "hey guys". It's just nbd to me.
I don't really relate to the term "man", but I'm very aware "man" has a history of actually being a neutral term (b4 the introduction of the term woman in English) so it does crop up in a neutral way. Mankind to refer to humanity and whatnot. So yeah, context.
Bro uh.... Not one I really think of as a neutral term. But since it's usually a term of endearment, I doubt I'd care if someone called me it
.
But I'd someone is using any of these terms to intentionally exclude women it's like

•I usually just say dude for guys and dudette for gals, although sometimes I’ll get them mixed up, Idk why
•
•I use all of them pretty neutrally. Man a bit less since all my friends are no male but it depends on the context of how it's said. Dude is the most neutral imo and I use it for anybody I vibe with. If someone specifies that they don't want to be addressed with those terms then I won't. Not sure what I would use otherwise though. It's cemented into my vocabulary at this point haha.

•I’m genderfluid but I can only talk for myself but even when I feel more feminine I’m totally okay being called dude bro etc…
•
•For me they are gender neutral terms but I never use them because I’m always too scared someone is uncomfortable with it even if they stated they aren’t
But I guess that’s just me overthinking at this point lmao

•I don't, for some reason our society takes "male" as neutral, though male is male. I still use them as I don't know many other options like idk, comrade, bestie lol
•
•I use them as gender neutral terms all the time, but if someone has specified that they dont want me to refer to them with these terms, then I try my best not to use them for that person :)
