character artistI've been trying to draw some portraits and I realized that I find it incredibly difficult to capture the likeness of the person I'm drawing. I can get the general face shape pretty accurate, but when I go to add everything else it turns out looking like a whole different person

Does anyone have any tips for this? What should I pay attention to when drawing someone's face?

I find that the silhouette plays a big part in likeness. So if you cant quite nail the features yet, go for getting the outline of the person right, and then just use the power of relation to place everything inside

It can take more than one attempt so domt beat yourself up too badly. exact copying is a skill.

•According to my art teacher, shadows play a very important role in making an accurate drawing of a reference. Their shape, their depth and all are very important. And try to compare the features between each other! (Ex the nose is twice as big as the eyes, the forehead is one nose long...) Hope this helped!

•I've learned that spacing is really important for accuracy, like the distance between eyes and the bottom of the nose, that sort of thing, something that helps practice, is drawing very distinct people to help get a grasp of their proportions
