Title of Work: Kape Rua "Doubled"
Medium: Ink & Sharpie Pen on Paper (Sketch)Description: This is my attempt at the "Kowhaiwhai design Kape Rua" sometimes referred as Kaperua. Like many languages, Te reo Māori does not have a set translation or meaning for the English dictionary as our native language can mean many things with each word or phrase, how an outside perspective would see it, it wouldnot be easily understood unless learnt firsthand. Reo does translate to language can also mean to speak or dialect or to talk or chatter. Kape was formally used to shape what would be a facial expression used in pukana (where our eyes would be wide, mouth set in a hard line with our chin rising forward, leaving a staunch and intimidating presence) the top row shapes into what looks like a row of eyebrows where the shapes line a row of mouths along the bottom. The long rows towards each centre remind me a lot of what looks like the shape of a jaw, where the white in the middle seems to give the idea of an eye socket in its place in repeat. The design itself is interesting and very old but recreated in a contemporary and modern way. It is created using traditional colors and I am satisfied with the outcome.May 18, 2021
