Story time! (And kind of a rant πŸ˜…)
So when I was in high school I had this art teacher who I absolutely loved at first. She was so knowledgeable and taught us so much more than just how to do something. She made us think and I loved it. For some reason she HATED me and my art and made sure I knew it. I will say I tended to push the curriculum a bit and most of my projects were late but they were late because I was putting so much work into them that 40 minutes a day just wasn't enough. She always told me that my art was terrible or "too weird" or "too dark" and back then it was very dark because I was going through soooooooo much. I went through a lot of things a child/teenager shouldn't but I powered though and I used art as my escape and my way to heal. I almost failed art my freshman and sophomore year because my art was too emotional πŸ™ƒ
She really tore me up though. After sophomore year I stopped drawing. I stopped painting. I didn't start creating again until like 3 years after I graduated because I just felt like garbage. I tried my senior year and pushed myself to make the best portfolio ever so I could get into an art school in Cleveland or New York. I wanted out of my teeny town in Ohio and I wanted to do something I was passionate about. One of my teachers junior year told me I would never mount to anything. I would always work dead end jobs because I believed in my dreams too much.
Today I draw or paint at least for an hour every day (unless my son is hurting or we end up at the hospital). I push myself to keep going because I still believe I can make a living off of my art. This week I completed two commissions and I get to give them to the owners Monday (they're local) and I'm so happy.
Moral of the story I learned to never give up and no matter how weird or dark and emotional my art may seem I'm still going to make it because that's what separates me from everyone else and dammit I'm determined to achieve my dreams!!!
