@sib_here's post on Artfol

So I'm trying to make a species, I don't quite feel there's anything that makes it 'special' to stand out from all the others.

I love the idea evoloons(check them out) of "upgrading" some features based on the user's interacting. (Im making sure I'm not ripping off the species just using as inspo)

I had this idea that they used to be sky animals, but starred living on the ground, and started evolving that way, but somehow they would be able to get their sky features back. (Using the upgrade kind of thing.)

That's super cool and interesting I think that would stand out, but there actually design just looks like I smashed different animals together instead of one animal.

So what I'm asking is, how do I make the design more cohesive? Sry for the long wall

i have a screenshot of a good explanation of how to make animal fusions more cohesive, can i dm it to you? 👀
Try mixing two things together. The Other one doesn't have to be an animal

For example trying mixing
Tiger and gold. You can mix either two animals, an animal and an object, or an animal and fruits/veggie/food

Another tip is to take an existing animal and completely change or add something/ability they usually don't have.

Ex. A species fox that's unable to see/born blind but they have super sensitive towards their surrounding.
With the wide variety of with actual animals, making an original species can be tricky. In writing, people always say that nothing you make will be 100% original, and that you have to mix inspirations from different sources. I think the same applies here. For instance, one of my original species I made by mixing gemstones and dragons. Another, insects and dogs.

I know that was kinda long, but basically, don't worry about making a 100% original species, because, like with writing, it takes mixing inspiration from multiple sources. I hope this helps :)
