StowawayIntroducing Thea Stokes, the confused cartographer hiding in the ship’s cargo hold.
She spent most of her life as an apprentice map maker in the small country where she was born. A place that denies the existence of magic and lives entirely cut off from the rest of the world, their ships never straying from the familiar trade routes that lead to their closest neighboring countries, and never knowing anything beyond them.
As a child, her questions about the world beyond were brushed aside and scolded, so she learned to ponder silently about the vastness of the world and how much of it might remain uncharted. Most of her childhood was spent in libraries, hunting down every book that might contain a map and copying it down in her journal over and over until it was perfect, though none of them ever depicted anything far beyond the borders of her home country. This carried on into adulthood as she obtained an apprenticeship under a man who she eventually realized never planned on letting her succeed him.
Frustrated and desperate to get away from her country’s perplexing dismissal of the larger world, she found herself secretly boarding La Gorgone, a ship that had recently appeared in harbor, and clearly came from very far away. An unfamiliar ship was a rare sight, and Thea decided the moment she layed eyes on her, she would be on board when that ship left. There was no chance of being hired as a sailor. She didn’t have much to offer in the way of physical strength, nor could she pay for passage, assuming they even took passengers. Stowing away was the only option.
She told herself she’d make maps to bring home and show her country how vast and beautiful she knew the world must be, if she ever makes it back at all, that is.
