Oh and if you're really unfamiliar with/never really worn makeup, you might start to notice that your face is more asymmetrical than you thought. That's normal. You can try to correct the asymmetry with the makeup (if you're doing a symmetrical look) or you could just go natural and let it be asymmetrical. Depending on what kind of makeup you're doing, it might not matter or be noticeable. Or maybe you do have a pretty symmetrical face. Mine definitely isn't

It's good to have a reference or a solid idea of what you want to do before you start, and it also helps to practice the same look cause usually the second or third time you do it will look a lot better than the first. If you're doing something that requires a steady hand (e.g. eyeliner) definitely sit down, and try leaning your elbow in the table/counter. If you can, rest your hand on your face for more stability. Try to use the right shaped and sized brushes, like use bigger and rounder brushes for covering larger areas and for blending. Use smaller and flatter brushes for small and unblended areas, and use a thin straight brush for lines ofc.
Idk what kind of stuff you're using and how many options you have, but I think water soluble stuff is good for practice because you can easily remove it, but if you're gonna put on something that you want to wear all day, use something waterproof/long lasting. I went to a concert wearing water soluble eye makeup and at the end of the day it was basically almost all melted off
but the other day I used stuff that didn't come off as easily and it lasted all day, though I did not go to a concert so that helps too haha.

So for me, I treat doing my makeup the same way as I do when making art and I use a reference, Especially if I want to do a intricate look, I will go on pinterest and look for a certain eyeliner style,etc.
if you struggle with eyeliner I would recommend using an ink liner and to stay away from liquid liner until you're comfortable with using it.
And then if you're uncomfortable with lining your waterline or getting super close to your eye, I recommend black eyeshadow !!
