I honestly don't think anyone is going to mob mock you over a character, if this is of any help. I found that if an author cares about their character and their universes it influences other people into wanting to know what's good about it, and stick to the story once they see it for themselves, unless they have issues and feel compelled to stomp on other kids' sand castles. What doesn't personally help me want to get invested in a character and their story is the author themselves calling them garbage, though.
Besides, it's stories and Ocs we're talking about; you'll most definitely grow an audience if you put it out there and be smart about it.
