When I was practicing learning painterly style (I’m assuming that’s what u mean) I tried to limit my ammount of layers, and to just draw and not worry. To imagine it was like a traditional canvas; so sometimes to practice, I would just use one layer, and maybe the selection tool.

Use dark colors for shading. Like use dark red for shading something orange or dark blue for shading something green etc

That advice about starting with color is in reply to another painting method: starting from grey scale.

Just know that a lot of these things are not rules, they are advices based off of people's experiences and preference.
You can absolutely use black as a shadow color. It depends on your style.
You can absolutely start with colors from the get go. Marco Bucci has a video about it. And that's how I start my digital paintings. What matters is the values of the colors and how they complement each other.
You can pick a small subject like a snail and try painting that to see what colors and methods you like.
Also watch traditional oil painters. They're wonderful for understanding shapes and simplifying the composition.

Try using grey versions (not too saturated versions) of the colors you want to use! It helps to unify the colors in the painting. And if you want to make a color pop, just add a tad bit of saturation to said color or grey down the other colors that are surrounding it. Marco Bucci has great tutorials on yt about color harmony and the color wheel in general, you might want to check it out

Know that color is all about relationships. Different colors react to each other differently depending on how you group them. What helped me was to guess what colors are used in some artworks I like and then try to choose the color closest to it. I would then use eye dropper tool to see if I’m close to the color and where it is on the wheel. Trains your eye and brain to see color relationships
