Two things: zines are DIY small booklets usually made with cheap material and easily distributed
And the one you see floating around on the internet are fanzines. Technically with how much money and editing are put into those Fan projects, zine may not be the right term for them — rather art books or anthologies. It just became more wide spread to use fan zine at some point

•It’s a fan magazine! It can have an original concept or be from a fandom, it’s basically a book that often contains art and writings but it can be about so many different things.

•I think it is short for „magazine“ but a digital version of it and not physical. It can be physical if the ppl collaborating to produce it decides to print copies to sell.
Zines specifically as I understand it are often a collaboration of fanworks for a specific fandom. But maybe there are other types as well.
