Casilla de Caminero

In the second half of the 19th century, Puerto Rico began a proyect to maintain its transportation infrastructure. With that, “camineros” [lit. roadmen] were trained technicians that would monitor the main highways and repair them when necessary. They were provided with housing in the form of the “casillas de camineros” [lit. roadmen’s little houses] that were built along the highway about every 6 km. Most have fallen to disrepair, but some have been preserved as cultural museums.
