Prism is actually mixed. He's half earth pony, half unicorn. The only unicorn traits he got were the horn/magic and lion's tail. A pure unicorn is MUCH smaller, sleeker, and has brighter pastel coloring. The black coat is definitely an earth trait. The HUGE body in height and bulk is an earth trait. The only unicorn-like color he got was a bleached blonde mane/tail. He eventually started dying in the rainbow to make it less earthy/natural. He has his issues with his body, but he tries to not let it show.
Because of being half earth, his unicorn magic is weak. He can't do the pretty spells that other unicorns can. His magic is very earthly. He can sense the smallest changes in nature. He couldn't tell you if you're gonna have a good farming season, but he can sense what flu variant will be strongest this year. He put this talent into virology, immunology, and toxicology. As a child, he was teased for being 'dumb'. He surely can't be as smart as the other unicorns! He was raised by a commoner earth pony. His sister is a commoner earth pony. This pushed him to work VERY hard academically and he pushed further ahead than any of his peers could dream. As a young adult, he is a lab doctor and researcher at a university. He studies disease processes and dabbles in the occasional biological warfare experiment. But nobody knows about that last part- not even his best friend Scooter. He's just a well-to-do doctor.
