It was cold. Even so, Raina was forced to wipe her hands on her tunic occasionally so the improvised spear would not slip from her grasp. That length of wood might be the only thing between her and certain death. Gloves would have helped, but would sacrifice some dexterity. It was the same reason she forewent proper winter clothing – instead sporting doeskin breeches and a sleeveless tunic. To provide some protection from the chill, long strips of cloth were wrapped around her arms, though elbows, wrists and shoulders were left bare.

She shivered in her waiting spot, not daring to move in case the lioness might notice. Instead, she tensed each set of muscles in turn. She stopped shivering long before her prey appeared.

The way she walked, it was obvious the lioness was tired, likely having a hard hunt today. That would make Raina’s job much easier to accomplish. But the girl stayed in her perch above the cave entrance, waiting for the moment she could corner the creature. Harnet was watching from a hidden ledge a ways down. Raina would be on her own for this.

Before the lioness made it halfway to the cave, an ear-splitting screech caused all of them to freeze. A massive shadow fell over the trail, and a great wind crashed down on them. Registering the danger, the lioness sprinted for the dubious safety of her cave… but she was too late. An immense, scaly talon caught the poor thing’s hindquarters, effectively crushing her legs. The rest of the fell beast followed, landing on the narrow path, and Raina found herself facing one of the most savage hunters in the entire north – a frost wyvern.
