depends on the person your trading with i guess,, ive done trades where we draw whatever but i usually prefer to decide like if its gonna be a headshot, halfbody, fullbody etc. so that we both get an equal amount of "art" lol and then both sides send references of each others character(s) of choice and you just goo off from there

It can be whatever the two of you agree on!! Most common are drawing each other's OCs just because it's the easiest, but I've also done some based on a theme in the past, and just generic "this is a picture for you!" without anything else really being discussed haha. It's honestly pretty casual, there aren't any rules set in stone so it can be whatever you want. Theres an unspoken agreement that you'd put a fair amount of effort into the drawing, but you can both agree to do a sketch request if either of you are short on time or anything. Just slide into their DMs and start talking about what you want to draw / like drawing / what you'd like to see from the other person.

Don't overthink it. The two people doing the trade just talk about what they want to draw until they agree.
"Can you draw this character for me?"
"Sure! Can you draw this character for me?"
"Yep! I only have time to do a headshot, so would you like to draw a headshot in return to keep things fair?"
"Sounds good to me!"
Then you draw the art.
"Can you draw this character for me?"
"Sure! Can you draw this character for me?"

•The size doesn't matter, the theme can depending if you guys each other one, commonly both parties specify what they want drawn like maybe undertale characters, your ocs, or maybe mobie redraws. You cna also just draw whatever if they say they don't mind just remmeber to ask.

I’ve only done a few but you just decide what you want each other to draw (it could also be a surprise) and then you trade when finished
