style + any critique?
i posted this on another platform and unfortunately got some hate for it
a friend also told me that since the character doesn't match the style of the source, it looks kind of unsettling. What could I do to improve this? thanks in advance!!Feb 5, 2022#critique

I think its very cute and I love the colour pallet!
I think the whole piece just needs some deeper shadows. Don't be afraid to add more contrast.

•Hey I'm sorry to hear you got hate for this! It's super cute, and you deffo shouldn't be feeling bad. But if that feeling motivates you to imorove, then hold onto it for a while, improve, and forget it the next day ;D
I actually think the character is really well done! Colors are good, and the pose is really cute!
For you to bring the whole piece together and get rid of the 'unsettling feeling' all lies in the background! I've just recently realized that by spending an hour more on background and composition, contributes to getting compliments tremendously!
When I first saw this illustration I thought 'wahhh do bad she has the umbrella and didn't use it to create a big shadow :(('
Things like this help a lot! I can already imagine how great this would look with a blurred blue-ish background where you could possibly depict a cherry-blossom tree (I see she has them in umbrella design). Maybe also some leaves passing by!
The shadow from her umbrella could be done by a simple layer mode so it's a small adjustment. With those modes (prob hard light or color dodge) you could also add small sun rays and have fun!
Now if you decided to do all this, I'd also advise to take extra time and add a bit of wind to her hair and clothes! It makes sense cuz at that point we know she's outside and it adds to the vibe.
