For this post, I wanted to ask you all a question that’s been on my mind for some time:
What do you think of self inserts?
I ask this because my main OC and the main premise of my art brand is my self insert OC and her universe. Yes, I draw multifandom and other things I love, however; my main goal is to focus on my self insert and the world built around her. It’s a long task for me since I’m still growing as an artist, but someday I do want to build an A.U focused on her and the other OC’s I’ve made.

I personally think self-inserts are fine, since a majority of the time, any OC you make might even incidentally end up with some of your traits. The important thing, however, is to make sure it doesn’t affect your story. It’s fine to have an OC take largely from your own experience so long as you recognize that you want to make a nuanced character, rather than… say… a Mary Sue. If your goal is to create a story, your self-insert should have flaws and interact with your plot, and be careful not to let your own attachment to your character overshadow room for growth or potential plot points.
