Uhhm... To somebody who knows anything about layers and all that hard techno stuff, what does alpha lock do??? 
Most of my favorite Instagram artists keep on recommending to use it but I can't cause I still have no idea what it's for???
Also I'm super confused why the pros start by making everything gray and then coloring it in...

Also is amazes me that you can make such gorgeous lineless art without alpha lock like how

โขSo like, say you drew a circle and filled it in on a layer. If you alpha locked that layer, everything you drew on that layer would only affect the circle. So itโs kinda like color-inside-the-lines except itโs color ON the lines

โขYou donโt use alpha lock?? Think clipping mask, but all in one layer. It locks transparency, so you can only draw over pixels youโve already put down in that layer.

If you unclip the layer, what you drew on it will no longer be limited to the space that was drawn on, on Layer 1!

Alpha lock is when you draw something on the layer, let's say a circle and then you alpha lock it and you will only be able to draw inside that circle but only on that same layer!
Alpha lock is useful if you need to change the color of something without coloring it again but a different color, you just alpha lock and use the bucket tool!!
I do also recommend using a clipping layer, it's similar to alpha lock but that you let's say again draw something one Layer 1,now let's say you drew a square and then you want to draw something in that square, like a pattern! So you go make a clipping layer and you can draw only inside that square but if you make a mistake, you don't have to worry about messing up your square or recoloring every time! Instead you just erase what's on that clipping layer and correct it!
Some names for tools will vary from program to program so use Google if you can't find something under a certain name

Alpha lock locks everything on a single layer, you can paint on it or erase but only the area that was โdrawnโ on when you locked the layer. Most artists do this to create gradients within areas of shadow or to change the color of the lineart. Pretty much you can just do whatever but it will only show on whatโs already there.
I believe some artists paint the background a dark color instead of white so itโs easier to see the colors and if you missed a spot.
Being an amateur just means you get to experience these things for the first time! Try all these things out just mess around with the settings and youโll get the hang of it pretty quick

โขIdk if this will be confusing but imma try. If you have lineart and you alpha lock it you now have the ability to ONLY color in the lineart. You will only be able to draw on the lines you have already drawn

โขSo, alpha lock makes it so you draw a shape, fill it in, and then you can scribble all over and the color will only show up in that shape. Very useful and a big time saver.
Gray background makes for more stable colors. Gray under paintings help with value spectrum. But like, oil painters do brown and blue under paintings and it looks a little less dead compared to gray, so Iโd do that.

The gray tone thing is mainly for paintings, itโs so you can get the lighting right BEFORE you worry about colors

โขAlpha lock is a setting on layers (sometimes itโs called other names) but basically it โlocksโ everything that exists on that one layer, so you can only draw on the areas that are locked. Itโs great for shading, bc you can take the base skin tone layer, lock it, and then go crazy go wild without colouring outside the lines.
