They were once the most feared generals in the entire afterlife until one day they simply disappeared never to be seen again.
Lucifer and Samael represent two sides of the "paradise loss" devil. With Lucifer representing physical strength. Or on a more baseline basis, Lucifer represents the Devil after he fell and Samael represents the Devil before he fell - though both are separate people in my versions of them.
