“The Quiet Ones”
An oil painting from December 2019.This is what I wrote on my Instagram at the time: “This was probably my favorite, most personal painting from the last year. Something about working on it felt therapeutic; and when I sat back to look at it after finishing, I was hit with some strange emotion, almost like looking at a part of myself.
So, I’ve decided that this one is dedicated to myself as a little girl. The girl who always felt like an outsider, whose “big buddy” in kindergarten didn’t even want her, who was teased at recess, who sat alone at lunch, who was constantly questioned about her shyness, who was accused of a bomb threat at school because— as a classmate said with a pointed finger— “it’s always the quiet ones.”
Life gets better for us, though— even if I do still carry that little girl with me wherever I go. 2019 was pretty darn great, and I’m going into a new decade (both my 30s and the 2020s) with commitment to a bravery I’ve never had before.”May 10, 2021
