I guess it just depends how interesting the style and character are when it’s original, with fan art people tend to connect more since that character or fandom is very well known so it has a higher chance of non flop. Of course sometimes artist just gotta give it time since this is a big area it can be hard to find what someone wants, and everyone has a different taste in what they wish to consume
I personally tend to find fan art boring most of the time...since I see that same character I see nothing special in it, even when I draw it I loose interest. It really just depends one who sometimes ack
